'Oh Rama then the hundred sons of the venerable sage who were angry upon hearing the words of Trisanku spoke as follows'

Balakanda
fifty eight Sarga

Satananda continued the story of Viswamitra.

'Oh Rama then the hundred sons of the venerable sage who were angry upon hearing the words of Trisanku spoke as follows. "Oh Foolish man! rejected by the master who always speaks truth, how did you expect us to ignore his line and help you. The high priest is the ultimate teacher of all Ikshwakus. It is impossible to disregard the words of one who always speaks truth .The venerable Sage Vasishta has told that your wish cannot be secured. How will we have the ability to perform that sacrifice. Oh Best of men! You are a fool. Go back to your city. That sage is capable of having sacrifice performed by anybody in the three worlds. Performing that sacrifice is after he declined is like insulting him. How can we do such a thing ".

'Hearing those angry words from them the king again spoke as follows. "Oh Sages with wealth of penance ! I have bene rejected by the master and his sons too. Then I will go in search of others. May you be blessed". Hearing those words of disregard and defiance the sons of the sage Vasishta were enraged and cursed him saying that he will become a chandala. Saying so they went back to their hermitage'.

'Then as the night passed the king became a chandala. He became black wearing black clothes. His skin became rough. He had small hair. He was wearing a necklace made of bones with ash spread over his body. His jewels became one made out of iron. Oh Rama ! Seeing him in that form of a chandala , all his ministers ran away followed by citizens behind. Oh Kakutstha! The lonely self indulgent king though seething with sorrow day and night approached sage Viswamitra who has a wealth of penance.

Seeing that failed king in a chandala form the sage Viswamitra had surge of compassion. With compassion the highly radiant Viswamitra ,the follower of right path addressed the king of terrible form. " Oh Strong one ! What for you have come ? Oh king of Ayodhya ! Oh great warrior ! you have become a chandala because of a curse !"

Hearing those words of the one who knows the use of words, folding his hands the eloquent King then told the reasons for his becoming a chandala to the sage.

" I have been rejected by the teacher as well as his children. I did not obtain my wish instead the opposite happened. Oh Kind one ! I performed hundreds of sacrifices to go to heaven along with my body. But I could not get the result.
Oh Kind one ! Swearing on my warrior code I say this. I have never told a lie in the most difficult condition. I will never tell in future also. I have performed many sacrifices. I ruled the kingdom following the rightful path. My Gurus were happy with my conduct".

"I want to perform the sacrifice following the path of dharma. That best of sages and my teacher did not agree with my wish. Now there is no way other than god. The power of a man is useless. Destiny is supreme. Destiny is the final dispenser of justice. I am very much pained. You can perform the rites to make destiny favorable. May you be blessed. I have no other go. I am also not asking anybody protection from anybody else. Only you can make the destiny favorable" .

Thus ends the fifty eight Sarga of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayan !
